Hillside garden needed retaining walls to stop erosion. Typical new home construction on a hillside, More rock than dirt. Stone is all local. Thanks to DSC for the 2-day workshop, and thanks to my wife and partner, who lifted and carried at least half of the stones. Comments and critiques are welcome.

Throughout the northern Virginia counties of Loudoun, Fauquier and Rappahannock (and others), the rock walls that surrround the farms and line the roads are made of fieldstone that has been gathered and stacked around the perimeters of the farms and roads. I have always been intrigued by their construction and in particular, the incorporation of the random shapes and sizes of of the rock. Forget one over two, two over one.
Prior to finding the DSC website and this community, in my quest to learn how to build a dry stack stone wall, I spent a day and half with a farm hand who took the time to show me his technique and basics rules. Hopefully, I'll be able to take a DSC workshop and learn more.
I hope that by sharing these pictures, others will see and appreciate what I feel is a distinct style typical of the rural northern Virginia area. I'll try to update my albums from time to time.

Please see www.shepherdspass.com for details of the land auction scheduled for May 9, 2009. These stone landmarks are all on a 10 acre piece of land, tract 2, of 9 parcels that are going to be auctioned. If there are, among this group, people who would like to own some of these stunning pieces of history, this is the opportunity.

I replaced a wooden bridge with a dry stone bridge 1/4 mile up the rugged trail going to the top of Spencers Butte near Eugene Oregon.
Spencers Butte is the tallest Butte in the Willamette Valley here in the Pacific Northwet as it is sometimes called ,(Northwest - some area get 90+ inches of rain in the wet season from Oct-April). Had to build a 46 foot long retaining wall that became the trail, on the trail getting to the bridge area. I excaveted basalt from the trail, reusing it for the stone walls. I also brought in Native Oregon stones Basalt and Andesite. The bridge took approx 65 tons, all brought in by powered wheelbarrows that had to be navigated through tight area of the trail. The two seasonal springs can at times be raging creeks, with the whole hillside having water seeping out. The bridge is 65 foot long, 5 foot 6 inches wide at the bottom 4 foot wide at the top. The bridge was built to be able carry loaded powered wheelbarrows carrying gravel for trail maintenance. Approx loaded weight with driver - 1 ton. Gravel was used for the trail surface on the bridge, proper stone packing/hearting techniques used in the wall - no gravel dumped in!!!!
