Introductory Workshops are designed for drystone enthusiasts with little to no previous experience who would like to gain a basic understanding of dry stone construction techniques.  This workshop is also the standard point of entry for those who may have done trail work, landscaping, and hardscaping who wish to better their working knowledge of the craft. The pace will be comfortable and participants will learn the fundamental skills needed to build and repair a typical rock fence or retaining wall.

Introductory Retaining Wall Workshop, September 18-19 in Salem, NY - This introductory retaining wall workshop will take place at Salem Art Works in Salem, NY. Alex Miller, DSC Journeyman, will lead the workshop in rebuilding a low-height (2-3ft tall) existing retaining wall (perfect for home hobbyists/gardeners), learning the fundamentals along the way. Introductory Rock Fence Workshop, September 25-26 in Lexington, KY - The introductory rock fence workshop will take place at McConnell Springs Park in Lexington, KY. This workshop will be led by DSC Master Craftsman, Neil Rippingale. Participants will take part in tearing-out and rebuilding a section of rock fence.

Introductory Retaining Wall Workshop, October 2-3 near Alma, KS - This introductory retaining wall workshop will take place in Volland, KS, near Alma. DSC Master Craftsman, Neil Rippingale, along with DSC Journeyman, Luke Koch, will lead the workshop in rebuilding an intermediate height (4-5ft tall) historic retaining wall. ON-SITE CAMPING WILL BE PERMITTED FOR WORKSHOP ATTENDEES!!! Only electric service, no others, will be available for RVs and Campers. Tents are also welcome. The Certification Prep Workshop is intended for those who wish to pursue the first level of the DSC’s Certification Program. The workshop will prepare the student for taking their certification exams. This workshop is not recommended for those who are just beginning or have not yet taken a workshop with us.

Certification Prep Workshop, November 4-5 in Clark County, KY - During the two days (Thurs-Fri November 4-5), participants will work with limestone to rebuild an historic retaining wall on top of a projecting foundation course.  Participants will also build a drystone wallhead.  Instruction will be based on the internationally-accepted specifications required to pass Dry Stone Conservancy's Level 1 Professional Certification exams.  Although some stone shaping techniques will be covered, the goal will be to learn how to lay stone with only minimal hammering and chiseling.   Certification exams to follow on November 6 & 7.
